Creativity in Nature is the transformation of random patterns of energy, time, and space into structured patterns of ever-increasing complexity. Artists are inspired by nature because they recognize the creative principles it manifests.
Creativity is the opposite of destruction, which reduces complex patterns of energy to simpler and more random relationships. The cyclical creation and destruction of patterns of energy, time, and space, results in the reality of physical existence. Space, time, energy, pattern, and creativity are, therefore, fundamental elements of reality.
Ernst Haeckel’s “Art Forms in Nature” Highlights Creativity in Animal Forms
The formation of energy into patterns is predictable. Creativity in nature is rooted in geometrical principles and we have used geometrical diagrams to describe the logical structure of the atomic elements for centuries. Geometry itself is an idea, and the logic of geometry exists independently of the physical world. Johannes Kepler, one of the major protagonists of the age of reason, wrote:
“Geometry existed before the creation. It is co-eternal with the mind of God. Geometry provided God with a model for the creation. Geometry is God Himself.”

We can observe the tendency of energy, time, and space to form patterns according to geometrical principles. Geometry is a language of graphic symbols that express the creative principles of unity, duality, polarity, equilibrium, and proportion. These principles are metaphysical, meaning that they have an ideal reality, which is independent of, and extends beyond the limits of time and space in the physical world. They direct the patterns formed by that creativity in nature but extend beyond their physical manifestations. It stands to reason that:
Creativity is the manifestation of an idea in the physical world.

In our century Buckminster Fuller wrote in his book Synergetics:
“Each of the chemical elements is a pattern integrity. Each individual [human being] is a pattern integrity”.
According to Fuller, pattern integrity makes things appear in the universe as physical objects. A pattern itself is not a physical entity, but the structuring of energy, time, and space according to a specific set of principles. Both the simple structures of the atomic elements and the complex and evolving genetic codes of living creatures are patterns of energy formed according to creative principles. Creative principles are not things, but ideas. Creativity in nature is based on metaphysical principles.

Nature’s creative process is its manifestation of the ideal qualities of unity, duality, polarity, equilibrium, and proportion. Nature does not first describe the thing it wishes to create, as we do, but spontaneously forms patterns of astounding complexity.
Creativity in nature is the process of manifesting an idea, and the fundamental idea that nature manifests is the creative process itself.
